The first look at Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has finally arrived, and it’s already garnering an enthusiastic reaction from fans. The trailer is chock-full of Easter eggs and callbacks, but some of the most exciting moments speak to the future. To be more specific, certain elements point to a new beginning for the storied adventure series. With the introduction of Phoebe-Waller Bridge’s character Helena and the trailer’s focus on a sad look back at the history of Indiana Jones, Dial of Destiny like another attempt to pass the torch.
With Harrison Ford aging into his iconic role (despite the use of de-aging technology), it feels like the right time for Indy’s adventures to end, finally. But given the current state of the cinematic world, it’s a foolish proposition to believe that any franchise with the potential to earn an Indiana Jones can reach a real end. With that in mind, it is a near certainty that the groundwork is being laid Dial of Destiny for a continuation.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge May Be Next Up for the Role of Indiana Jones
One of the main pieces of evidence that points to a continuity is the introduction of Helena. Indy refers to himself as his “godfather,” and he appears to be an important plot element. Most of the key set pieces teased in the recently released trailer directly involve Helena. In fact, in one quick moment, he even wore a similar outfit to Indy’s iconic adventure outfit.
Trailer Highlights the End of the Indiana Jones Era
The trailer emphasizes Dial of Destiny being the iconic character’s final ride. The tone is somber and nostalgic, bringing back characters not seen since the original trilogy, such as Jonathan Rhys-Davies’ Sallah. And Sallah’s voice-over narration looking back on the couple’s past adventures, along with Harrison Ford’s age, suggests that this photo is the one where Indy finally hangs his hat. Additionally, the trailer promises the return of the franchise’s ultimate Big Bad — Nazis of the series. All the iconic elements of the original Indiana Jones trilogy are back in full force, which speaks to the “last hurrah” energy of the proceedings shown in the trailer.
Indiana Jones Has Tried Passing the Torch Before
There is also a precedent set in the Indiana Jones franchise for the attempted passing of the torch. In the previous stage Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Indy’s illegitimate son Mutt Williams (portrayed by a then-young Shia Labeouf) looks set to take up the mantle of adventurer in his father’s stead. The final shot of the film even featured Mutt literally taking his pop’s iconic fedora in a clear nod to the character’s potential future. Due to poor reception, that future never materialized. However, it is clear that the goal is there. While Waller-Bridge’s character probably won’t work as a literal replacement for Indiana Jones, down this path, the next step in the franchise won’t be a Indiana Jones movie. It will be a Helena-centric spinoff, with the character’s own adventures front and center.
Plot details around Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is scarce, to say the least. Many have theorized that time travel plays some part in Indy’s latest adventure, which opens up a whole different can-of-worms in terms of franchise implications. But as the trailer clearly shows, Indiana Jones as a character is nearing his cinematic end. And more importantly, the hints throughout that trailer indicate that when an inevitable sequel arrives, it will have Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character Helena as the headliner.
