India and the UK on Tuesday agreed to conclude talks on a free trade agreement at an early date. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday met UK Secretary of State for International Trade Cammy Badenoch to review the progress of negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement and agreed to conclude it at the earliest.

The meeting was the first major debate on the proposed FTA since the Rishi Sunak government took office in the UK in October. Both sides had earlier planned to wrap up the talks by Diwali.

“India-UK FTA negotiations and a range of bilateral trade and economic relations were discussed,” the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.

The sixth round of India-UK FTA negotiations is underway in New Delhi. The previous round of talks was held in July. Negotiations for the FTA began on January 13 this year. According to the statement, the two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the FTA negotiations, which will unlock the full potential of trade between the two countries by creating jobs and boosting investment and exports.
