FZO expects to produce about 200 million gallons (750 million liters) per year of carbon-free gasoline in Matagorda County, Texas
FZO Matagorda eFuels plant timeline updated to Q1 2024 for start of construction and 2027 for commercial operations
HOUSTON, SANTIAGO, Chile, SYDNEY and BERLIN, December 6, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — HIF Global, the world’s leading eFuels company, announced today that its subsidiary HIF USA LLC (“FZO USA“) engaged Bechtel Energi, Siemens Energi and Topsoe to conduct front-end engineering and design (“FEED”) of the facility to be built in Matagorda County, Texas for the production of carbon-neutral gasoline (“HIF Matagorda eFuels Facility”).
Once operational, the HIF Matagorda eFuels Facility will produce carbon-neutral gasoline that can be put into vehicles in use today without any modifications to existing engines or the infrastructure they depend on. Carbon-neutral gasoline will be produced using approximately 2 million tons of CO2 captured from the atmosphere and green hydrogen from renewable energy sources. HIF USA expects to produce approximately 200 million gallons (750 million liters) per year of carbon-free gasoline by 2027, with the potential to decarbonize over 400,000 vehicles. HIF USA estimates the creation of approximately 4,500 direct jobs during the construction phase, which is expected to begin in the 1st quarter of 2024, and more than 100 permanent jobs.
Renato Pereirageneral director of the FZO USA said: “The start of FEED’s 12-month engagement significantly advances the HIF Matagorda eFuels Facility beyond preliminary engineering into this second phase of project design. Upon completion of the FEED, we expect to achieve a Class 2 cost estimate and a level of engineering sufficient to begin construction. Bechtel Energi, Siemens Energi and Topsoe are essential to the successful completion of this pioneering facility, which will provide solutions for the decarbonisation of the transport sector without any modifications to existing engines or delivery infrastructure.”
Bechtel Energi will lead the engineering and design of the entire facility, which includes the integration of Siemens Energi and Topsoe technologies and equipment. Siemens Energi will be responsible for the engineering and design of their proprietary “Silizer 300” electrolyzers required to produce approximately 300,000 tons of green hydrogen per year. Topsoe will provide engineering and design for the methanol and methanol-to-gasoline processes, which will combine green hydrogen with 2 million tons of CO2 captured from the atmosphere to produce approximately 1.4 million tons of methanol, then synthesize methanol into 200 million gallons (750 million liters) of carbon-neutral gasoline per year.
“Supplying the cars and ships used today with carbon-neutral e-fuels is an effective way to accelerate the decarbonisation of our transport sector and unlocks the advancement of large-scale green hydrogen and CO2 capture technologies,” HIF Global CEO, Meg Gentle, said. “Working in partnership with Bechtel Energi, Siemens Energi and Topsoe is key to designing a safe, reliable and low-cost facility that will set a new frontier in the fight against climate change.”
“Decarbonising our daily transport is now within our grasp,” he said Paul Marsden, President, Bechtel Energi. “We look forward to partnering with HIF Global, Siemens Energi and Topsoe to develop this eFuel facility that will shape our energy consciousness and build our path to net zero.”
“Siemens Energi is proud to support HIF in bringing e-fuel production to commercial scale.” United States,” said Rich Voorberg, President, Siemens Energy North America. “Siemens Energi and its world-leading portfolio of energy technology products enable the energy transition and decarbonization of the economy.” Connecting the sector plays a key role in this effort, and Siemens Energi is excited about this opportunity to help develop sustainable fuels by building our Silizer to produce hydrogen from clean energy sources.”
Roland BaanCEO of Topsoe, said: “We are proud that HIF Global has selected our technology for this truly innovative project that will contribute to the decarbonization of American transportation. Our technology will be used to directly convert renewable hydrogen and CO2 into methanol, which is further converted into plug-and-play eGasoline. We are excited to introduce our e-fuel technology and see HIF Global’s inspiring project come to life.”
