‘Hear it from us’: UK royals Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary to air

LONDON, Dec 1 (Reuters) – “When the stakes are so high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear the story from us?” Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, says in a trailer released Thursday for a Netflix documentary series about Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife.

The first clip from the much-anticipated documentary was released ahead of the series’ expected release next week, and comes as the British royals wrestle with a new race row.

Since Harry and Meghan stepped down from royal duties and moved to California two years ago, they have been vocal in their criticism of the British monarchy, including accusations of racism, which has caused a rift with the rest of the family, particularly Harry’s father, King Charles. and older brother, Prince William.

The last time Harry and Meghan opened up about their relationship with another royal family in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, it plunged the institution into its biggest crisis in recent times, and the royals will fear new dire revelations.

The timing of the trailer and documentary could hardly be better for Netflix, with William and his wife Kate currently in Boston, and Buckingham Palace dealing with a racism row involving William’s godmother.

“Harry and Meghan. Netflix Global Event”, the streaming service said on Twitter. The accompanying trailer features never-before-seen black-and-white pictures of the royal couple, and one of them at an official event with William and Kate, all four looking grim-faced.

“No one sees what goes on behind closed doors,” Harry is heard saying in the trailer. He is later shown saying: “I had to do everything I could to protect my family.”

At the end Harry is shown throwing his head back as Meghan wipes away tears.

No official release date has been given for the six-part documentary, although the media has widely reported that it will air on December 8.

Netflix said the series would “share the other side of their high-profile love story” and “explore the challenges that forced them to step back from their full-time roles at the organization”.

Crashing the Boston party?

The focus is on Harry and Meghan as William and Kate make their first international trip since Queen Elizabeth’s death and with the new titles of Prince and Princess of Wales.

While he is due to meet US President Joe Biden during his first US trip in eight years, the main objective for the couple is to attend an award ceremony for the EarthShot Environmental Prize set up by William.

“Our number one focus … is the Earthshot prize and we will not be distracted by other things,” a source close to William said before the trip.

But, it is already overshadowed by other events. On Wednesday, the prince’s 83-year-old godmother repeatedly asked a black woman, Ngozi Fulani, “What part of Africa are you from?” at a high-profile Buckingham Palace function.

Fulani, who was born in Britain and works for a domestic abuse support group, described the incident as “abuse”. Both Buckingham Palace and William condemned the incident, with the prince’s spokesman saying “racism has no place in our society”.

To top off a bad day for William and Kate, during their visit to a Boston Celtics basketball game, some in the crowd could be heard chanting “USA, USA” loudly as pictures of them were shown on a big screen in the stadium. UK media reports said the couple also faced some boos from the crowd.
