Harrison Ford is Marvel’s latest big addition to the MCU’s roster of top talent. The actor will play Thunderbolt Ross, replacing the late William Hurt, who portrayed the military man-turned-politician in various MCU adventures.
Ford will make his MCU debut Captain America: New World Orderalthough we expect the character to appear Thunders and other MCU Phase 5 and 6 adventures. That’s because we also expect Harrison Ford to be the Red Hulk in the MCU, and he’ll be the leader of the Thunderbolts.
These are not major Thunderbolt Ross spoilers. After all, Ross became the Red Hulk in the comics. And he will be involved in the creation of the Thunderbolts team. After all, Ross and the group share the same nickname. But we’re about to cover some real spoilers below as we examine recent rumors and explain how Marvel may have accidentally confirmed everything. You may want to avoid the following if you want to avoid Marvel spoilers.
Is Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross the president of the US in the MCU?
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever dropped a huge reveal about the MCU. Val (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is the ex-wife of Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and the current head of the CIA. He’s fierce and wants Wakanda’s vibranium, a sentiment the US president might share.
We know from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Black Widow that Val is recruiting the Thunderbolts. But he can’t do it alone, with the US president likely having to approve plans for covert ops like this. If you’ve ever thought that Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross might be the president to oversee such programs, you’d be right to wonder.
We last saw Secretary Ross at the end of Endgame, as he attends the memorial for Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Ross’s appearance in the Black Widow precedes the events of Endgame in the MCU timeline, since that story is a prequel.
Could Ross have been president since then? Anything is possible in the MCU, but it just so happens that an insider recently said that Thunderbolt Ross will be the president of the New World Order.
It’s therefore reasonable to assume that Ross will oversee the creation of the Thunderbolts team, with Val actually leading the team at the moment.
How Marvel might have confirmed this big MCU rumor
Imagine that the Red Hulk would also be the president of the US and leader of the Thunderbolts. That’s certainly an exciting prospect, but we can’t verify. However, we may know how Thunderbolt Ross became president, and it’s all thanks to another MCU leak that may have been confirmed by Marvel’s Secret Assault trailer.
First of all, a series of Secret Assault set photos that made it to Instagram in early March hinted that Dermot Mulroney would play President Ritson on the Disney Plus TV show. There is no mention of Thunderbolt Ross in this context.
But the scheduled photo leak shows a paper that mentions President Ritson next to James Rhodes (Don Cheadle). The president is in London for emergency talks following “unprecedented tensions.”
Mulroney has avoided questions about his role in the MCU in interviews. And the connection to Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross is still unclear. But this brings us to the first Secret Assault trailer. There’s a scene at the end of it where a helicopter fires missiles at a motorcade. And the camera gives us a glimpse of someone in the cars about to explode.
It certainly looks like President Ritson will be attacked Secret Assault. We have no idea what happens next, but here’s thinking Mulroney’s career in the MCU might be short-lived. The president may die or be incapacitated during the attack.
This opens the door for Thunderbolt Ross to become president. What’s clear is that Marvel may have accidentally confirmed this big Harrison Ford rumor even before the news broke that Thunderbolt Ross would be the president of the US in the current MCU.
Of course, we could be wrong in putting these rumors together. But the narrative certainly fits. And that makes Thunderbolt Ross one of the most influential people on the planet before him becoming the Red Hulk would certainly be an exciting development for the character.
