- Harrison Ford tried on “about 75 hats” to find the right look for his character in “1923.”

For his role in the upcoming “Yellowstone” prequel series “1923,” Harrison Ford tried on “about 75 hats” before producers settled on the right one, according to the show’s costume designer.
The new drama, premiering on Paramount+ later this month, stars “Indiana Jones” star Jacob Dutton, an ancestor of “Yellowstone” character John Dutton (Kevin Costner).
At the show’s red carpet premiere Friday night, costume designer Janie Bryant shared that Ford’s look took longer than expected to wear off because of the number of different styles of cowboy hats he had to choose from.
“It’s all about his hat,” Bryant told Variety. “We did so much for her. All different colors — trying different creases, different lips, different crown heights.”

The award-winning costumer, who previously worked on “Mad Men,” “Deadwood,” and “1883,” added that “it’s definitely a process” to get right.
Bryant said the production went through an estimated 75 hats before settling on the modest, pale-colored hat Ford can be seen wearing in publicity shots and trailers for the new series, which they later labeled “The Jacob” of his character.
Bryant added that it was very important to showrunner Taylor Sheridan to find the right hat for the character because Jacob is the definitive idea of a Western cowboy in the world of “Yellowstone.”
He said: “Taylor was very specific about the type of hat she wanted, too. There was a lot of collaboration with Taylor, with Harrison, and myself, to create what I call ‘Jacob.'”
Ford and Helen Mirren star as Jacob and Cara Dutton in the new spinoff.

The show focuses on the second and third generations of the Duttons as they “struggle to survive a historic drought, lawlessness and prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle rustling; all fought under the cloud of Montana’s deep depression, which ahead of the country by almost a decade.”
In addition to Ford and Helen Mirren, the series also stars “Game of Thrones” actor Jerome Flynn, star of 1995’s “Pride and Prejudice,” Jennifer Ehle, “Scream” actor Marley Shelton, and former Bond star that Timothy Dalton — who was recently seen on Netflix’s “The Crown.”
Brandon Sklenar, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, James Badge Dale, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, and Julia Schlaepfer round out the cast.
“1923” premieres on Paramount+ on December 18.
