Harrison Ford gets the Benjamin Button treatment for the upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
As director James Mangold previously promised, Ford — now 80 — appears decades younger, thanks to de-aging technology. That’s because the fifth — and final — installment of the franchise will open in 1944, which is eight years after the events of 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
But four decades have passed since then, and Ford is not the same. Therefore, visual effects and Industrial Light & Magic software worked with Ford’s old footage from previous films, which they matched and imposed on the new footage.
“My hope is that even though it’s about technology, you just watch it and say, ‘Oh my God, they just found footage. This is something they shot 40 years ago,’ ” producer Kathleen Kennedy recently told Empire.
“We take you on an adventure, something that Indy is looking for, and immediately you feel like, ‘I’m in an Indiana Jones movie.’”
Ford previously admitted that seeing the younger version of himself was “a little scary.”
“This is the first time I’ve seen it where I believe it … I don’t think I want to know how it works,” he said. “But I don’t want to be a child. I’m glad I got my age.”
He also hinted that this would be his last film in the franchise.
“This is it,” the octogenarian reportedly said during a standing-room-only presentation of the trailer at Anaheim’s D23. “I will never fall for you again.”
Even with the trailer, plot details for the upcoming film are scant. Actors Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Oliver Richters, Ethann Isidore and Mads Mikkelsen join the cast.
Production for the fifth film was uneventful. It faced a month-long hiatus after Ford suffered several stunt injuries, and a crew member was found dead on location in Morocco in November 2021.
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” will be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.
