A new research and development center dedicated to creating technology to help people with disabilities is the first to be opened by Google in the UK.
The Accessibility Discovery Center in London will be used for research and product development, Google said, and will also have a learning space, an interactive zone for visitors.
The center was created in consultation with groups including the Royal National Institute of Blind People, the Royal National Institute for Deaf People and disability charity Everyone Can, the technology giant said.
It is the company’s first Accessibility Discovery Center outside the US.
“When people have equal access to information and opportunities, everyone wins,” said Christopher Patno, from Google’s accessibility and disability inclusion team.
“But we know that people’s needs are constantly changing, over the course of their lives or over the course of their day.
“We’ve made exciting progress on accessible technologies like Project Relate that help people overcome everyday barriers, but we know we have more to do.
“Our new Accessibility Discovery Center creates a dedicated space for learning and partnering with the accessibility and disability communities to continue to improve and build helpful products together.”

Project Relate is a Google app that has just launched in beta in the UK, which enables people with non-standard speech to understand their device and teach them to communicate more easily.
“This Government is committed to transforming the everyday lives of people with disabilities, so I welcome the opening of Google’s new Accessibility Discovery Centre,” said Tom Pursglove, UK Minister of State for Disability, Health and Work.
“By bringing together people with disabilities and technology experts, the center will help realize the potential of assistive technology to remove barriers and increase opportunity.”
