While we patiently await the arrival of the next Feature Drop – the first to begin after the release of Pixel 7 – Google will not take the rest of the year. Whether you’re streaming an Android phone, Chromecast, or your Pixel Watch featured in email, Google is ready to deliver. The team has all the new tools in store for all your tools, starting with some cool custom work for your photos and emoji.
Google holiday deals
December is upon us, so let’s get started with those new ideas. Google Photos is getting a series of collage improvements for its editor, featuring creative designs you won’t find anywhere else. These are new styles for photos, perfect as we quickly approach Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Whatever you celebrate, these collages are ready to go for your Instagram feed. They should be available in stock soon, so keep an eye on the app for some cool stuff.
And of course, no visual experience is complete without Emoji Kitchen accessories. New mashups are coming to Gboard, just in time for some winter snowstorms. Google’s example combines a snowflake and a wolf to create a visual animal, but we can’t wait to see what other secrets are included this time.
Casting, streaming, and more
However, the holidays can be tiring. If you’re looking for a one-off opportunity, Google has you covered with a ton of media-related features. A new search widget for YouTube allows you to find long video stories from your home page, the perfect excuse to avoid family game night. Now, if you have the house to yourself, stream some of your favorite Christmas songs with a new streaming option in the Google TV app.
It’s not just about finding and streaming your favorite movies and shows, though. Reading mode for Android is a feature that can improve the experience of enjoying books or long articles on the go, especially for people with limited vision or dyslexia. Google’s new tool allows you to customize every aspect of the reading experience, including font and text size, contrast, and more. It’s also a great way to get everything you’ve saved to Pocket in the last twelve months before 2023 rolls around.
And when it’s time to get home from your holiday parties, you can toss the keys to your chosen driver (and yes, this is my best attempt at a segue). Google is adding support for shared car keys between Pixels and iPhones, with more phones running Android 12 and later.
Wear OS upgrades
Finally, Google brings new features to Wear OS. With the Pixel Watch now on the market — and, presumably, a bunch of new ones coming with the holidays — it’s the perfect time to clean out the wardrobe. Two new tiles are coming to Wear OS, listing your favorite apps or showing sunrise and sunset times without opening an app. This time of year, the latter is especially important, especially if you’re trying to work outside during that brief window of daylight.
However, the redesign of Google Keep’s handset is finally here, a few months after we got our first glimpse. With a design inspired by you, Keep looks better than its predecessor, with improved colors, backgrounds, and more. Assistant for Wear OS is also getting some new tools, including Adidas-brand collaboration for quick start-up and running with your voice. No more typing before you start a run – just say a few words and start leaving those cookies.
