Another (small) win for the Fediverse
With Elon Musk now heading to Twitter, one of the best social media apps (well, at least before), and unfortunately, many users are looking for an alternative. One of the strongest candidates to attract attention is Mastodon, a decentralized social network composed of independent “federated” service centers that can connect to each other. The thing that sticks with him right now is probably the problem that every up-and-coming internet business is facing – fairness. But now Google, of all companies, is starting with a Mastodon seat.
Earlier this week, we started seeing posts from a Mastodon account for Google. But heed our words: this is not Google first Liaison, however, is a new home for the Google Search Liaison account. There is also a Search Liaison account on one of the main Mastodon sources, mastodon.social, and another for Google’s Public Liaison for Search, Danny Sullivan. Both stories seem to be on the way, though — their bios direct people to follow them on Mastodon for “the latest,” and the tweets note “posted from Mastodon.”
While this is an exciting development for Mastodon believers, it doesn’t mean that Google is fully committed to adopting Mastodon. Although the company is worried about Twitter imploding in the coming weeks, it is not like moving away from the platform. However, the fact that a multi-billion company is establishing an official presence in Mastodon encourages the platform’s ideas. We’d like to see more Google accounts out there that rely more on this, although, for now, we don’t.
