A selected A/B test is running
Google has recently released Chrome 108 on Android and other platforms. The update brings some of our favorite web apps to life with some new features like support for keyboard shortcuts, resource management, and a power saving feature. The update helps Google A/B test a major content change that could help the Chrome Omnibox as well as the Google Search app.
When Chrome 108 was in the Canary platform two months ago, a new banner was introduced designed to facilitate the Omnibox – Google’s name for the web address box, which doubles displayed as a search box. The new interface places each search term or suggested website URL on its own card instead of displaying them as a continuous list on a single card. The high-end concept gives the upper corners the new Omnibox design, complete with unchanged graphics and the introduction of flower buttons according to each concept.

9to5Google reports that Google is currently A/B testing the Omnibox redesign with Chrome 108 stable channel users and Chrome 109 beta testers. The general test is a good sign. The new UI mimics the Pixel Launcher search functionality in the Android 13 QPR1 release. As a result, the Chrome Omnibox looks more stable and integrated on Android.
Since the last time we saw it in Chrome 105, the address bar has changed to a wider format, usually seen in a black color, used for easy identification. So now, the search you’re typing will stay in the Omnibox, but the comments will have their own card.
Note that the modified address bar doesn’t look different when you’re just scrolling a web page. You need to click on it to bring up the menu and search instructions / web pages to see the new interface. Hopefully, the integrated change will make it through testing, a steady stream of new content to come.
