The Glen Oaks Community College hoops teams split a double header with visiting Henry Ford College on Wednesday night. The girls got the win at home, but the boys fell to the visiting Hawks, 97-61.
In the women’s game, it was dicey at times for the Vikings, but they were able to hang on for a 60-47 win. Henry Ford battled foul trouble at times and ended up with only four players on the floor for the game. Neither team shot the basketball well, Glen Oaks finished at just 26.5 percent from the floor and Henry Ford was even worse at 17.9 percent.
“Any time you can get a win, regardless of whether it’s two points or 50 points, it’s a good win,” Glen Oaks coach Robbie Hattan said. “It’s nice to be back in the win column. One of these days we’re going to put it all together — some days we’re good offensively, other days we’re good defensively. When we put it all together, we’re going to be a great basketball team.”
Glen Oaks improves to 4-8 on the season with the win. Before Wednesday’s win, Glen Oaks had dropped five straight games after a solid 3-3 start. Henry Ford is now 0-7 on the season.
“We have to continue to get better and grow as a team,” Hattan said. “As a JUCO, a lot of these kids haven’t played together very long, so we’re looking to continue to build on that.”
Glen Oaks scored in double figures in each of the four quarters played for the contest. Henry Ford hit double figures in three of four, but scored just nine in the opener.
GOCC led 14-9 after one. In the second, the lead grew to double digits for the Vikings at 28-18. Henry Ford’s team was able to bring it back to the single digits, though.
Glen Oaks’ lead at the break was 31-23.
Henry Ford actually outscored Glen Oaks in the third, 14-13. The Vikings were getting decent looks at the rim, but they weren’t scoring effectively. However, they hung onto the lead entering the final stanza of the contest at 44-37.
Hannah Outlaw helped keep Glen Oaks ahead, scoring six points in the third quarter.
In the fourth, Glen Oaks did enough with 16 points to stay ahead. The Vikings finished the game with a total of 27 points in transition and 30 in the paint.

In the men’s game on Wednesday, Henry Ford ran away with a 97-61 win.
Henry Ford got hot early, connecting on several shots early in the game, forcing a Glen Oaks timeout to help stop the momentum. That timeout didn’t help much as Henry Ford continued to attack offensively, going from an early 7-3 spurt to leading by double digits.
The lead for the Hawks quickly grew to 20 points, where the lead stood for most of the first half. Glen Oaks managed to end the opening half on a positive note, however. The Vikings trailed 43-25.
In the second half, the Hawks continued to get stronger on the offensive end. The lead quickly dwindled to more than 25 points and at that point, Henry Ford was out and cruising in the contest.
The Hawks didn’t reach 100 points for the game, but posted 54 total points in the second half of Wednesday’s win. Henry Ford made a game-high six 3-pointers and connected on just 9-of-16 shots from the foul line.
Glen Oaks also made six 3-pointers in the game and was an impressive 9-of-11 from the foul line. The Vikings could never get ahead of Henry Ford enough to change the course of the contest, however.
With the loss, the Vikings fall to 6-6 on the season. They play twice more in the next few days, hosting Parkland (4-5) on Saturday before playing at St. Clair County on Monday. Following that, the Vikings went on hiatus for the holiday season and won’t return to action until January 7.
