Ahead of the opening round of the Heineken Champions Cup this weekend, various players were asked who the players they most respected were.
The answers seem to follow a pattern, where players usually choose a compatriot who plays (or has played) the same position as them. Malakai Fekitoa chose Ma’a Nonu, Nick Isiekwe chose George Kruis, Courtnall Skosan chose Bryan Habana etc. Then, out of the blue, George Ford went and selected Duane Vermeulen.
There were no clearer signs that the Sale Sharks and England fly-half are still haunted by the 2019 World Cup final than the selection of the player who was named man of the match that day. England could not control the Bok No8 in Yokohama, although Ford may have nightmares about his back row partner Pieter-Steph du Toit from that match.
Ford’s Sale actually host Vermeulen’s Ulster this Sunday at AJ Bell in the Champions Cup, although the fly-half is still out with an Achilles injury. Maybe he’s really happy with who he’s going to play with.
