GIBSON CITY – Entering Friday’s game against Iroquois West, the prospects for the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley varsity boys basketball team ranged from a spot in the championship game to Saturday’s fifth-place game.

After going into halftime with a 33-26 lead, GCMS trailed 56-50 with 48.5 seconds left. After Ty Cribbett drained a 3-pointer with 10.3 seconds left in regulation, the Falcons (2-1) forced a turnover with their full-court press before Brayden Elliott handed the ball off to Cribbett, who drilled a game- tying trey at the buzzer to force overtime.

“We had a lot of good efforts offensively,” Tompkins said. “We did a lot of good things, especially in the first half. We moved it really well and got good looks against their zone. Then they changed their defense a little bit, and it took us a minute to adjust.”
In the third quarter, Iroquois West outscored GCMS 15-5, starting with a basket by Leonard. After Minion made a bucket with 6:59 left in the third quarter to make it 35-28, the Raiders went on a 13-0 run.
Leonard and McMillan each made a basket before intercepting an inbound pass and scoring on a fastbreak layup to cut Iroquois West’s deficit to 35-34 with 4:35 left in the third quarter.
Two baskets by Leonard, including one on a putback, gave the Raiders a 38-35 lead before McMillan’s 3-pointer extended the lead to 41-35 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter.
“Some of our rotations are a little slow as far as getting information sent and things like that, but that’s going to be better,” Tompkins said.
Elliott drained a 3-pointer to cut the GCMS deficit to 41-38 before Kollross picked up his fourth foul. Zach Barnes stepped into his place for some playing time despite some ailments.
“He’s still been able to go out there and do a lot of great things,” Tompkins said. “That’s good to see. We had guys come off the bench and do a great job defensively.

“We have to build on the positives and get better in the areas of improvement,” Tompkins said.
