Ford has issued a recall affecting 634,000 SUVs worldwide. The vehicles in question may have suffered fuel line cracks, which could have led to an under-hood fire, as reported by CNN.
As confirmed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, certain Ford Escapes, dated 2020 through 2023, and Bronco Sports, dated 2021 through 2023, equipped with a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter turbocharged engine are at risk for their fuel injectors that crack, allowing fuel or vapor to leak into high-temperature engine parts and ignite.
Fixes for the issue are not yet available. Starting December 19, 2022, the company will begin contacting owners of affected vehicles, who can bring their vehicles to their local dealer for a software update, which includes leak detection fuel injectors, and installing a drain tube, which will redirect any leaking fuel. away from hot surfaces inside the engine compartment.
According to CNNif the updated vehicle detects a possible injector crack, it will trigger a dashboard warning light and a reduction in engine power, allowing the driver to safely stop and call for service.

At this time, Ford is not proposing to take potentially affected vehicles out of service. CNN reports the company hopes the problem won’t happen often, with 20 fires apparently related to the issue reported.
Some of these vehicles were also included in a fire risk recall earlier this year due to potential oil leaks. While the brand says most of those vehicles have been repaired by now, they are still at risk of fire due to fuel leaks and will still require the additional service provided under this new recall.
