After a two-year wait, Ford finally revealed its “Megazilla” crate engine last week at a trade show event in Indianapolis. An upgraded version of its 7.3-liter “Godzilla” V-8, the Megazilla gets several improvements inside and out to boost performance, with a claimed output of 615 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque .
Displacement is unchanged in the jump from Godzilla to Megazilla V-8, though most of the internals have been augmented with more powerful components. While the cast iron block and forged steel crankshaft remain unchanged, there are forged H-beam connecting rods, Mahle forged pistons, and CNC-ported cylinder heads. On top of the engine you’ll find the Ford Performance low-profile intake manifold and the 92-millimeter throttle body from the Mustang Shelby GT500’s supercharged “Predator” V-8.
Peak power from the Megazilla comes in at 5800 rpm, while peak torque reaches 3800 rpm. Ford also claims that the engine can deliver over 500 lb-ft of torque from 2500 to 6000 rpm, meaning a steady torque curve as you travel through the rev range. A spokesman said Road and Track via email Megazilla “aims to be easier to drop into car applications than just trucks.”
Ford says the Megazilla V-8 crate engine will be available starting in the second quarter of 2023, though it hasn’t released a price yet. We expect it to be quite a bit more expensive than the $9175 Godzilla engine, considering all the add-ons. If it’s anything like Godzilla’s at producing power under load, we’re in for a good time.
