Ford Motor Co is recalling 634,000 sport utility vehicles (SUVs) worldwide due to fire hazards from possible broken fuel injectors and urging owners to check their vehicles.
America’s No.2 automaker by sales said the recall covers the 2020-2023 model year Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs with 3 cylinder, 1.5 liter engines, including many that were also recalled in April because an oil separator housing can crack and develop a leak that can cause an engine fire. Vehicles repaired under the previous recall will still need a new recall repair, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
Ford said when the engines in the SUVs covered by the latest recall are running, a cracked fuel injector could cause fuel or fuel vapor to collect near hot surfaces, potentially resulting in an underbody fire. hood.
Once repairs are available, dealers will update the vehicle’s software to detect a broken fuel injector and provide a message on the dashboard to alert drivers.
“If a pressure drop in the fuel rail is detected, engine power will be automatically reduced to minimize any risk, while also allowing customers to drive to a safe location and stop the vehicle and arrange for service,” added Ford.
Dealers will also install a tube draining fuel from the cylinder head and away from hot surfaces and check for excessive fuel odors near the top of the engine.
The recall covers about 520,000 vehicles in the United States and about 114,000 in other countries.
Ford says it has had 54 total reports of 1.5 liters under fire, including four with broken fuel injectors. About 13 others were probably caused by a leaking fuel injector.
There were no deaths associated with the recall.
Ford said it is not telling owners to stop driving vehicles under this recall. The company projects a low failure rate for fuel injectors that experience external leaks.
