The province is in the midst of a population boom that is expected to grow by more than two million in the next 10 years. The most incredible part is that 70% of this growth will occur in the Greater Golden Horseshoe. As a way to help accommodate people moving into the province, Ford plans to build 1.5 million houses over the next 10 years. This new law will help jump-start the number of homes being built as the federal government promises to bring in half a million immigrants annually.
“Our Housing Supply Action Plan creates a strong foundation on which 1.5 million houses can be built over the next 10 years. Our government is following through on our promise to Ontarians by cutting delays and red tape to get homes built faster,” said Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
The proposals to Houses Built Faster2022, will, if passed, ensure that cities in the Greater Golden Horseshoe will grow with a mix of ownership and rental housing types that meet the needs of all Ontarians.
The law outlines a plan that contains about 50 different actions. Plan policies provide the basis to develop further by:
- Reducing government fees and red tape that delays construction and drives up home prices.
- Promoting building near transit and zoning reform to create more “gentle density”.
- Protecting home buyers and using provincial land to build more affordable homes.
