BALASORE: Hundreds of farmers from Jaleswar district under the banner of Krushak Sangram Manch staged a protest in front of the Electricity Department office at Bazaar station on Thursday demanding restoration of power supply to lift irrigation projects.
Electricity supply to the project was disconnected by Tata Power North Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL) before monsoon for installation of power meters. The militants, led by Congress leader Sudarshan Das, said that floods occur frequently in the Subarnarekha river during the kharif and rabi seasons. has affected their cultivation. In this situation, farmers rely on lift irrigation. However, TPNODL disconnected power supply to several lift irrigation projects ahead of this year’s monsoon, affecting crops.
Das said that many farmers using lift irrigation were being overcharged for electricity. He demanded that “TPNODL not only install small meters for irrigation projects, but review the amount of bills,” he demanded.
The protestors submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Secretary of Power Department, ADM TPNODL, Collector, local tehsildar and BDO through TPNODL Jaleswar circle officials.
