Elton John will headline Glastonbury Festival next summer in what will be the final UK show of his farewell tour, the festival announced on Friday.
John will top the bill on the music festival’s final night on June 25 on the Pyramid Stage, Glastonbury organizer Emily Eavis said in a statement posted on the festival’s website. Glastonbury Festival is held most years in Somerset in southwest England. In 2021, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Paul McCartney were the main cast.
In a statement shared by his publicist, the singer said he “couldn’t be more excited to headline the Pyramid Stage,” adding that he “can’t wait to embrace the spirit of the world’s greatest festival.” It will be incredibly emotional.”
“I am delighted to inform you that the one and only Elton John will be making his first Glastonbury appearance next year, headlining the Pyramid Stage on Sunday night,” Eavis said.
“This will be the final UK show of Elton’s last tour, so we’ll close the festival and mark this huge moment in both our histories with the mother of all send-offs,” she added.
The performance will close the UK leg of John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour”, billed as his last, with over 300 dates before his retirement after 52 years of touring.
The tour, which started in 2018, was originally scheduled to end in 2021. It will now end next summer after being postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“As my Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour comes to an end, there is no proper way to say goodbye to my British fans. They have been brilliant, and have supported me through all the highs and lows of my career,” said the five-time Grammy winner.
To date, John has performed throughout Europe and most recently in North America. Last month at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, he took the stage in a sequined Dodgers baseball uniform, recreating his appearance from his previous appearance at the stadium in 1975.
