It is 9 years in November 2022 since the federal government privatized the electricity sector. Since then, the electricity sector as it is called is also divided into three value chains namely, electricity generation, electricity transmission and energy distribution.
The electricity distribution and generation company in Nigeria was privatized in 2013, with the federal government retaining ownership of the transmission company.
The country has 23 (23) power plants that are connected to the national power grid, with the ability to produce electricity. These plants are managed by Generating Companies (GenCos), Independent Energy Providers, and Niger Delta Holding Company.
Today, Nigeria has about eleven distribution companies that ensure energy is brought directly to your home across the states of the country.
- These distribution companies, which are called ‘Discos’ are 11 in number and they are like private companies with board and management team.
- Depending on the state you live in, expect to pay your electricity bill to the distribution company.
