This new announcement comes shortly after the studio closes after these games
Studio Onoma, formerly Square Enix Montreal, is closing four mobile games. Arena Battle Champions, Deus Ex GO, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, and Space Invaders: Hidden Heroes will be removed from the App Store/Google Play Store on December 1st, and downloads will not be available after January 4th.
Unlike a shutdown (the poor Stadia will remain as a punching bag), players will not receive payments for in-game purchases made in these games. Some of these, including Arena Battle Champions, rely heavily on pay-to-win mechanics, so this is good news for many players as they lose their purchases.
This closing is the latest in a series of events for the studio. Bought by Embracer Group in May for $300 million along with the rest of Square Enix’s western developers, Onoma was announced to be closed earlier this month, a month after it was renamed.
The short time between rebranding and closing is impressive, but since this is a cost-cutting measure, we may see more cuts in the future. The closing of Hitman Sniper: The Shadows is telling, even if it did not celebrate its first birthday.
Square Enix’s mobile games haven’t been announced yet. Onoma is behind the GO series of games, which brought popular franchises to mobile devices, including Hitman and Lara Croft. These titles are new games that we hope will not go the way of Deus Ex GO.
If you’re enjoying games that are slated to open, you’ll want to use the in-game purchases before January 4th, when access opens. And if you still want to give the games a shot, you have one week to download them. However, you cannot make purchases within the game.
