Ride-sharing operator Lima is to launch a new pay-as-you-go electric bike hire scheme in Derby next year, which will see the council invest more in improving local cycling infrastructure.
Derby’s e-bike rental scheme was previously run by Hourbike. The company rolled out a fleet of electric bikes in June 2018 before shutting down the scheme a year later due to vandalized machines.
Derby City Council launched a new tender process in July this year, with Lime becoming the new operator in the city.
In total, 550 e-bikes will be put on sale across the city from spring 2023, which will be available free of charge to the municipality.
The initial launch will see 150 e-bikes across the city in the East Midlands, with Lime set to add 400 additional machines later. Lime hopes the new e-bikes will give Derby residents access to “more accessible travel choices, while reducing pollution and congestion.”
Last month, Lime announced it would launch plug-in e-bikes in Nottingham, with 700 Gen4 bikes to be launched next year.
Derby City Council plans to reinvest funding provided by the Department for Transport – originally allocated to an e-bike scheme – to support cycling infrastructure in the city.
Lime’s Gen4 e-bike has a range of 64 km (39 miles), with replaceable batteries that the company oversees, helping to keep e-bikes on the streets for longer. It also gets front and rear lights and a phone holder that allow drivers to easily navigate and follow directions.
“E-bikes are a great alternative to shorter journeys by car, providing citizens with a clean, comfortable and cheaper transport option,” said Councilor Steve Hassall at Derby City Council.
“This scheme is another step towards our ambition to make electric transport more accessible within Derby and to achieve our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035.”
Lime’s e-bikes will be available for hire via the Lime app, costing £1 to unlock and then 17p per minute. The company will offer a 50% discount on the price of e-bike rides for lower-income residents through the Lime Access program.
“We look forward to working in partnership with Derby City Council, with our scheme supporting their wider plans to install more cycling infrastructure and reduce local reliance on cars,” said Lima UK’s Senior Public Relations Manager, Hal Stevenson.
The Lima e-bike scheme will run alongside an approved e-scooter trial run by Wind Mobility.
