If you’ve ever wondered how long a USB cable is, now is the time to find out. Our Zak Khan deep dive answers the question.
“The maximum length of a USB cable depends on the version of the USB standard it is designed for and whether it is an active or passive cable. - USB 1.1: 5 meters (16 feet)
- USB 2.0: 5 meters (16 feet)
- USB 3.0: 2-3 meters (6.5 feet — 9 feet, 10 inches)
- USB 3.1: 3 meters (9 feet, 10 inches)
- USB 3.2: 3 meters (9 feet, 10 inches)
- USB 4: 0.8 meters (31 inches)
Don’t forget that the manufacturer says that their phone works with different USB standards, it’s not true. If the phone is lower but claims to meet higher specifications, be careful. It is best to buy from a reputable manufacturer with good reviews.
Why is it so long?
- With active and passive USB cables, other factors play a role as the thickness of the cable’s metal conductors.
- If your USB device also sends HDMI, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, or other signals, that’s also a concern.
- Because passive cables do not amplify signals, the longer the cable the weaker the transmitted signals.
- This means that if your phone is too long (or long or thin), you will lose more data and the speed will be slower.
- Long cable runs can increase the risk of noise from other devices amplifying data signals.
- Zak explained: “Then there are other issues, especially technical issues like clock jitter, that start to rear their head at higher speeds and data transfer rates.”
- With booster cables — those that contain circuitry to amplify signals — length is less of an issue, because strong signals can travel longer without degradation.

Over the cable length max
You can increase the power cables to a specific level:
- 30 meters (98 feet) for USB 2.0
- For USB 3.0, 3.1. and 3.2, this is about 18 meters (59 feet).
- Powerful USB 4 cables are being introduced but are currently only about 3 meters (9 feet, 10 inches).
- Or you can use a powered USB hub, which plugs into a USB port, and connects your long cables to the hub.
