BOGOTA (Reuters) – The Colombian government awarded a 3.25 trillion peso ($674.5 million) project on Wednesday to Spanish engineering firm Sacir to reconstruct and maintain the Dike Canal, the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) said.
The Canal Dica is an artificial fork of the Magdalena River, in the Caribbean region of Colombia, that was built in the 16th century to facilitate passage between the river and the city of Cartagena.
The project will repair degraded ecosystems and mitigate the impact of possible flooding in a wide region of the South American country. It will initially last 15 years and is expected to create around 61,000 jobs.
The environmental mega-project is needed to help transport goods through its waters to Colombian ports in the Caribbean, ANI said in a statement.
