Cloudflare Launches New Impact Initiative for Critical Infrastructure Organizations, Starting in Australia, Germany, Japan, Portugal and the United Kingdom

SAN FRANCISCO, December 13, 2022—(BUSINESS WIRE)–Cloudflare, Inc. (NISE: NET), a security, performance and reliability company helping to build a better Internet, today announced a new Impact Initiative to provide trustless security for small and medium critical infrastructure organizations around the world. This new program, called Project Safekeeping, aims to protect under-resourced organizations that provide a critical benefit to the community but are at high risk of cyber attack, with initial efforts focused on Australia, Germany, Japan, Portugal and the United Kingdom.

“We know that cyber attacks are on the rise and that critical infrastructure is a common target.” But we know that when governments tighten their grip on security, it often means that the largest institutions are protected, at the expense of small communities,” said Matthew Prince, Co-Founder and CEO, Cloudflare. “Given the success we’ve had with our critical infrastructure program in the United States, we’re excited to roll it out to more countries around the world.” Cloudflare is the only company making Zero Trust available to the smaller infrastructure organizations most vulnerable and reliant on in their communities – local health clinics, energy providers or local utilities that keep communities going.”

Government resources tend to be allocated to the largest and most visible critical infrastructure – huge financial institutions, hospital networks, oil pipelines and airports. However, the small organizations that are the foundation of communities are also at risk and often rely on outside support, grants and volunteers: a neighborhood health clinic, a water treatment facility and a local energy supplier to meet basic needs. Cloudflare’s Safekeeping project will build on the Critical Infrastructure Defense Program, created in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to protect US infrastructure. Cloudflare will now expand support to the global community, initially focusing efforts in Australia, Germany, Japan, Portugal and the United Kingdom.

Small organizations need equal access to zero trust

Eligible entities in these regions will receive free access to Zero Trust’s enterprise-grade cybersecurity services, as well as world-class application security products such as DDOS protection and Web Application Firewall (VAF). Now, critical infrastructure entities at risk can begin their journey with zero trust and:

  • Connect users to apps: Real-time verification of each user for each application protects internal resources and defends against potential data breaches.

  • Filter traffic: Secure Web Gateway (SVG) prevents cyber threats and data breaches by filtering unwanted content from web traffic, blocking unauthorized user behavior and enforcing company security policies.

  • Secure cloud applications: A cloud access security broker, or CASB, performs several security functions for cloud-hosted services (eg, SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS applications). Standard CASBs secure confidential data through access control and data loss prevention, detect shadow IT, and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations.

  • Protect sensitive data: Data Loss Prevention (DLP) secures your organization’s most sensitive data in transit.

  • Prevent phishing attacks: Area 1 proactively blocks phishing, business email compromise attacks, non-malware scams, and other continuous attacks coming through email.

To be eligible, Safekeeping project participants must be non-profit entities, local government bodies and small and medium-sized private organizations whose primary focus is providing services that are vital to the health, safety and basic economic needs of their communities.
