On December 1, utility City Power deployed 52 newly appointed electricians to reduce its reliance on contractors and foster responsibility for a specific area in Johannesburg’s power grid.
Electricians will be deployed in parts of the city’s network susceptible to problems and take direct responsibility for parts of the network.
Previously, contractors were “randomly” hired by Citi Power to fix outages and fix long-term problems, but the newly appointed electricians will foster a better understanding of the problem and build a body of knowledge specific to their field, Citi Power claims.
He says this will allow for more sustainable solutions to short- and long-term issues based on the region-specific experience of in-house electricians.
“This will save Citi Power millions of rands a year in contractor fees and ensure better accountability in the work that is done on a day-to-day basis.
“While we recognize and appreciate the work done by our good contractors, City Power needs to build its own capacity and requires direct responsibility of its own electricians for the construction. Poor workmanship will no longer be tolerated,” MMC Environment and Infrastructure Service Michael Sun says.
City Power will hire more electricians in the coming months with the goal of deploying a total contingent of 300 electricians by mid-2023.
“This is part of a larger strategy to reduce the amount of emergency repair funds spent on labor, as opposed to the repair of components and equipment needed for sustainable repair and rehabilitation of infrastructure.”
“This ratio is currently 70% labor and 30% materials.” This must be reversed to ensure that seventy percent of this budget is used for materials and not for labor,” notes Sun.
The plan was in the making for six months, and over 100 applications for electrician positions were received.
