China has accused the UK of ignoring “basic facts” after the Foreign Office in London published a report that said “Uyghur Muslims are facing horrific persecution in China.”
A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in the UK told reporters that the report made irresponsible comments and was gross interference in China’s internal affairs.
The Chinese people have the biggest say on China’s human rights record, the spokesperson told reporters. “China has always been committed to promoting and protecting the human rights and fundamental freedoms of its people, and has made great progress in the cause of human rights, a fact acknowledged by anyone free from prejudice.”
The embassy said Xinjiang is benefiting from economic development, social stability, improved livelihoods and ethnic unity. “The Chinese government’s policy on Xinjiang has won the full support of people of all ethnic groups,” the spokesman said.
Following comments published with the report from Foreign Secretary James Smart, the embassy reminded the UK of recent allegations of human rights abuses against refugees held in centers in the UK and said the nation suffered from racial discrimination.
“During the UK’s invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, innocent people were killed indiscriminately, leaving behind an atrocious record of human rights abuses,” the spokesman said. “The UK must reflect on its own serious human rights abuses, and is in no position to lecture other countries.”
Responding to claims that Christians, Muslims, Buddhists and other practitioners are at risk of persecution, China said it was the fundamental policy of the Chinese Communist Party that people of all moral groups enjoy freedom of religious belief and challenged the “baseless”. “Allegations of media censorship, say journalists from around the world are always welcome in China.
“We urge the UK side to correct its posture on human rights issues, stop its practice of double standards and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs in any way,” the spokesperson’s statement concluded.
