Could the Ford brand return to Formula 1, possibly in partnership with Red Bull, in the future?
With the increasing popularity and success of Formula One in the United States of America, a well-known manufacturer may return to the sport. With the growing success of the F1 Drive To Survive series and the inclusion of three State-side Grand Prix on the 2023 calendar, the new interest from Ford is more than understandable.
The last time Ford participated in Formula One was in 2004 when the brand supported the Jaguar team from 2000 to 2004. As a team, they only scored points on 22 occasions in five seasons. Considering that the old points system was still in place, Jaguar only scored 45 world championship points throughout their time in the sport.
The Jaguar team was sold to Red Bull, which had a more successful time in Formula One. But can Ford make a comeback?
Is a return to Formula One possible for Ford?
Allegedly, any involvement the American brand may have in sports in the future will not be very significant. In the sense that they are not looking to financially back an entire team or create their own power unit to compete with other manufacturers. However, they will reportedly partner with a pre-existing team, with the popular choice being Red Bull.
Such a partnership could pique the interest of the Red Bull team. The world champions have made it clear that they are not looking for a new power unit partner from 2026. Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner said on the matter:
“[On] the combustion and mechanical side of the engine, we are on a roadmap to 2026 that we are very excited about.”

But that doesn’t mean the team is closed to partnerships in other areas. Honda, a former collaborator of Red Bull’s, recently expressed renewed interest in the sport. And Red Bull looked to partner with Porsche from 2026 until talks soured, with the German giant wanting more control.
If Ford is looking at having some involvement in the sport, this could be a suitable pairing for Red Bull.
Who is Red Bull’s more likely partner from 2026, Honda or Ford? Or will they go it alone?
