KEOKUK (WGEM) – Small businesses in Lee County, Iowa, are gearing up for all the fun that comes with the annual Puttin’ in Glitz event.
Simply Home Boutique and Antiques manager Sam Ford expects a full house during the Main Street Keokuk Puttin’ in Glitz event.
Ford the event brings a lot of money for the business.
“It’s pretty exciting because you usually don’t get to walk through it,” Ford said.
Ford has been working as the manager of Simply Home Boutique and Antiques for about two years, but he’s not the only person looking for cash this weekend.
The boutique features work from 19 other vendors.
“Some of them are retired nurses, you know retired people and just housewives, whatever,” Ford said.
To attract more people to the shop during Puttin’ on the Glitz, Ford tempts customers with free wine, beer and snacks.
Main Street Keokuk also organized a scavenger hunt throughout the 29 participating stores to keep customers spending in stores longer.
Kira Kruszynski of Keokuk’s main street said she wants people to shop local every day, but Puttin’ on the Glitz allows small businesses to draw more people to their stores than usual.
“Especially during the holidays, we want to remind people to shop local, shop their locally owned small business first before they go elsewhere and Puttin’ on the Glitz is a great way to do that,” Kruszynski said. “At this point because we’ve been doing it for 32 years, Puttin’ on the Glitz has really become a community tradition.”
While Ford hopes to make a significant profit from the event, he also wants to see all participating businesses be successful at the holiday shopping event.
He said he loves Keokuk and is ready to see so many people in the community come together in one place.
“My goal is for everyone to do well every month, whether it’s January or December,” Ford said.
Puttin’ on the Glitz takes place from 4 pm to 9 pm on Friday, December 2, along Main Street in Keokuk.
Kruszynski said visitors can purchase a $10 raffle ticket to be entered to win more than $1,000 in gift card prizes.
Proceeds from the raffle will go towards the construction of the Great River Player’s courtyard.
