Former world No. 1 male tennis player Boris Becker has been released from a UK prison after serving just eight months of his sentence and is to be deported from the UK, PA media reported on Thursday.
“Any foreign national who is convicted of a crime and sentenced to prison is considered for early deportation,” the Home Office said in a statement, according to Reuters, while declining to comment directly on Baker’s case.
Boris Becker, originally from Germany, has lived in London since 2012 but does not hold British citizenship.
In April, Baker was found guilty of four charges under the Bankruptcy Act relating to his 2017 bankruptcy case and was sentenced to two-and-a-half years by Southwark Crown Court judge Deborah Taylor. He was originally scheduled to serve half his sentence in prison.
Taylor accused the six-time Grand Slam champion of “playing the system in bad faith” by hiding and transferring assets and depriving creditors of more than £2 million ($2.51 million).
According to Reuters, Baker previously denied all allegations and said he had cooperated with the bankruptcy proceedings.
CNN has contacted the UK Ministry of Justice for a statement.
Baker made tennis history by winning Wimbledon in 1985 at the age of 17 and went on to win five more Grand Slam titles over the next 11 years.
He has remained active in the tennis world since his retirement from the game, notably as Novak Djokovic’s coach and appearing frequently in the media as a commentator and pundit.
