We won’t try to fool you – if gaming is your main hobby then mobile gaming probably won’t quench your thirst forever. However, if something happens to your console or PC and you find yourself with a phone or tablet, it’s not the end. In fact, it’s the perfect time to explore a realm of play that might surprise you.
It is also worth noting that controllers such as the Backbone One and the Razer Kishi can now play games on the phone in a console-style manner. You can read our recent Backbone One review to learn more about that.
To help you get started with mobile gaming, we thought we’d share what we think are the top 10 mobile games to play at the time of writing (both iOS and Android). From card games to platformers to more exotic games – keep reading to see what that section can fit in your pocket.
13. The rise of cultures
We recommend starting with a game you’ve seen advertised on the internet. While these suspicious ads may scare you, we’re here to say that this isn’t all that bad. There are many mobile games under the category of “idle game” – which means that after some time the game will play itself, and you have to check every time.
More like this
Rise of Cultures is a great example of this, which means you can fit it around your schedule. It’s also a great game for fans who love Age of Empires but don’t have the time to play it. It might not be one for serious gamers, but it’s good for casual ones.

12. Fortnite
More than just a battle-royale game, Fortnite is a cultural event that features many ways to play. You can’t play the main experience without a house (and without teammates if you want to go it alone), but you can do some side missions made by people Tap on Creative mode.
Fortnite is changing all the time, but there is an attraction to the battle that you will do in the long run, earning XP in different aspects of the game. It’s a great way to spend your free time, and it’s free to start playing! Works well with mobile devices such as Backbone One. Of course, you need a good internet connection to get the best out of it.

11. Two points
With a beautiful simple graphics and heaps of animations to record, Two Dots is one of the cheapest games on mobile in our opinion, and it offers many ways to play.
Over hundreds of free levels in the main part of the game (a fun match-three game), Two Dots has weekly treasure hunts where you can read in beautiful works of art in search of images, objects and things. there are other exceptions (think Where’s Wally with a much nicer version).
Play Two Dots for free on Android or iOS
10. Before your eyes
When we first played the PC version of this game, we were very impressed with its heart-warming story and a very unique game mechanic – you control the game by typing, with the life of the main character in before your eyes.
You can read our Before Your Eyes review to see what else we have to say about it, or read our Before Your Eyes interview to learn all about it about the developers and how they ended up partnering with Netflix to get this award-winning game on mobile devices. .
Play right before your eyes on Android or iOS (free with a Netflix subscription)
9. Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact, like Pokemon Go years before, took the world by storm when it came out for free. This is in the middle of the lock, so – like Animal Crossing – it is a lifeline to those who need gaming comfort.
It’s a gatcha game, which means that the game will rotate around the money in the game to be spent to get something in the game. With new content coming out all the time, it can be hard to get started right now, but many people do, and many promise that it’s never too late to start Genshin!

8. The wandering spirits
Wayward Souls is a fantasy adventure game that resembles the old Zelda series to the core, with a loop that is more like a roguelike. The difficulty of this game is a step up from what we have said so far, but we think it is time to introduce something to test your ability.
If you are a fan of Hades, or the Souls series, and want something similar on your phone, we recommend Wayward Souls.
Buy Wayward Souls from the App Store or Google Play Store (£6.99)
7. Super Mario Run
Sometimes, we just want a casual look when we go out with only our phone for company. Well, relax, because everyone’s favorite Italian Plumber (unless you’re familiar with the real Italian plumber) is now available on mobile. And although it may seem like a casual runner, the game is fun.
It is not an “endless runner” but an automatic runner with many different levels, each with many coins to collect. There are many different species, and a Toad Garden to build and expand with the coins you earn. Happiness in the palm of your hand.

6. Between us
In the present life, it is surrounded; on birthdays, on memes, in public at a fancy dress party. Man Among Us is a cultural icon, and we think this is fitting. Another locked game, Among Us is a sci-fi Cluedo where friends work together to save an airplane, while one or three assassins try to sabotage the entire business.
Many people enjoy it today as a fast-paced game that jumps at any time. Very simple, but definitely one of the best mobile games.

5. Thimbleweed Park
On the surface, a mix of X-Files, Twin Peaks, and ’80s retro gaming. And once you dive in you won’t be disappointed. And it’s not surprising, because this specific tour and click comes from the same company that created the brand The Secret of Monkey Island.
The winner of many awards, this game will be a blessing to your mobile phone. Don’t just take our word for it – try it yourself!
Buy Thimbleweed Park from the App Store or Google Play Store (£8.99)
4. Pokémon Go
Although it’s true that the craze died out about five years ago, Pokémon Go is still a great game to get into. Walking around the real world, with an augmented reality Pokémon-world on your phone, is a dream come true for fans of the franchise.
It’s also a great way to get exercise and vitamin D in your game, but please watch where you go. You don’t want to fall down a man-hole in your search for that rare Pokémon.
Download Pokémon Go for free on iOS or Android
3. Surprise Snap
It’s not a complete list with Marvel Snap’s beauty. It’s a card game for Marvel fans, of course, but it’s also a game that everyone can enjoy. The different card slots are great, and the loop lives up to that marketing slogan of “simple but addictive”.
Like most mobile games it’s a pick up and play kind of thing, but you can spend all day in Marvel Snap. With great artwork, easy gameplay, and lots of Marvel stuff, we think it’s going to be a great day.
Download Marvel Snap for free on iOS or Android
2. Stardew Valley
Something unusual here, but it’s so beautiful that we give it a high. In this role-playing sim, players take care of a character who inherits a farm. How they continue the story is open to them after that – if you want, you can live a lonely life, or you can get married and have children.
Just look at that screenshot, though – it’s a beautiful looking game. And if you give it a chance, we hope you have a great time.
Buy Stardew Valley from the App Store or Google Play Store (£4.99)
1. Papers should be fine
One of the best video games of all time was released on mobile earlier this year, so we have no choice but to put it on top of this list. Papers Please is a border-control-officer-sim, which is nowhere near what it sounds like.
Your decisions have consequences, both for the innocent (or not) people you let loose in the fictional dystopia of Arstotzka, and for your own family back home. It’s a serious puzzle game and, dare we say it, a piece of art. You need this game, and if you haven’t played it yet, download it on your phone.
Please purchase Papers from the App Store or Google Play Store (£4.49)
What about the best games on Apple Arcade?
And here’s one last note. If you’re playing on iPhone, you should check out Apple Arcade (click that link to learn more), a subscription service that lets you play fun games like Alba’s Wildlife Adventure, Hot Lava and Warped Kart Racers. Everything we’ve tried on that site so far has been our favorite.
Those games also support controllers, which is a plus if you’ve installed a gamepad attachment for your phone. We’ve tried to focus this article on games available on Android, but check them out if you’re an Apple-head!
