GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Gerald R. Ford International Airport is requesting proposals for a permanent hanging art installation to be displayed in the newly expanded Concourse A.
Officials said the suspended art will be located above four terrazzo flooring art installations, which will be visible from all angles to create a sense of circulation.
Designed by Jorge Barrero of HKS Architects, the concourse mimics the experience of arriving and passing through West Michigan, the newspaper said.
“We thought a lot about putting art throughout the public space,” said Casey Ries, director of engineering and facilities at Gerald R. Ford International Airport. “The choice for this installation is to be suspended from the stunning sawtooth ceiling, designed to capture natural light in the modernized concourse.”

The expansion of Concourse A is part of the Elevate Program where nearly $500 million in infrastructure investments have been earmarked to improve the visitor experience, while positioning the airport for continued growth.
Construction of the expansion is expected to take 24 months, with the first phase scheduled to open in spring 2023 and the project expected to be completed by the end of that year.
Officials said artists interested in submitting proposals should aim to complement the design of Concourse A, which features the blue of Lake Michigan, the natural tans of the sands with the greens of the forest and fields. in between.
“The hanging art piece is critical to accentuating our unique sense of place,” Ries said. “Welcome everyone to West Michigan.”
Proposals for the new art installation are due January 15, 2023, at 11:59 pm
Artists interested in submitting proposals can find more information here. Submissions for the wall art will be open at a later date, officials said.
