Some actors do some roles themselves. Think of the Indiana Jones movies, for example. Can you imagine anyone other than Harrison Ford rocking Indy’s hat and whip? However, no one is irreplaceable in Hollywood, and every franchise is ripe for recasting and rebooting.
The Star Trek movies gave us two Captain Kirks, we had three live-action Spider-Man actors, and we didn’t even get started on James Bond. Most actors see recasting as an inevitability, a job hazard, but others don’t go quietly into that dark night.
Take Alec Baldwin, for example. He really didn’t like it when Harrison Ford replaced him as Jack Ryan in the sequel to The Hunt For Red October and wrote about the experience in his 2017 memoir Nevertheless.
Baldwin said that when director John McTiernan asked Ford if he knew the studio was still trying to get Baldwin back for the sequel, the Star Wars movie star told McTiernan, “fuck him”.
Later in the book, Baldwin describes meeting Ford and describes him in less flattering terms, “Ford, in person, was a small man, short, curly, and scruffy, whose low voice sounded like coming from behind a door.”
Oh. In the next Huffington Post column, Baldwin will explain why he was cast again in the action film.
“John told me that a few months ago, he was in negotiations to do a movie with a famous movie star who quit his movie days before so he could star in the sequels to The Hunt For. Red October ,” he wrote. “John even told me that Paramount owes the actor a large sum of money for a greenlit film that broke before it, and that pushing me aside would help to alleviate that debt and put someone with more power at the box office than me. the paper.”
