Burla, Odisha – Bharti Airtel (Airtel), India’s leading telecommunications service provider, announced today that it has won the mobile IoT solution assignment with TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited, (TPWODL), a joint venture between the Government of Odisha and Tata Power. The order will see Airtel power 200,000 Smart Meters with IoT solutions, of which 70,000 will be delivered in the first phase.
The connectivity command will be added to Airtel’s proprietary IoT platform, “Airtel IoT Hub” which will enable devices to track and monitor these smart meters with advanced analytics while maintaining high reliability with telco level security. Smart metering is one of the rapidly advancing use cases for mobile IoT in India with several power distribution companies hoping to invest in this space to prevent revenue leakage.
Smart metering is also one of the fastest growing service lines in the IoT business for Airtel. The company is working with several state utilities in Punjab, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar. The Indian government has an ambitious vision to replace 300 million traditional smart meters in the next five years as part of its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) initiative. Airtel IoT aims to play a key role in enabling this government’s vision of excellence. The digitization of the power sector by the Indian government’s push to bring transparency and consumer-friendly measures in the sector will see innovations like the Smart Meter become commonplace.
