NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel on Tuesday said it has won a contract for mobile Internet of Things (IoT) solutions with TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL), under which it will provide its IoT solutions for 200,000 smart meters.
Of that, 70,000 smart meters will be delivered in the first phase, according to Airtel’s statement. TPWODL is a joint venture between the Government of Odisha and Tata Power.

“With the capabilities of remote network capabilities, advanced diagnostics and a future-ready IoT platform with APIs ready for seamless integration, we are confident of serving our customers well in this space,” said Siddharth Talawadekar, Business Head – IoT at Airtel.
Airtel said it will use the “Airtel IoT Hub” under the mandate to help monitor the utility and monitor these smart meters with advanced analytics while maintaining high reliability with telco-level security.
Sunil Mittal-led Telecom has claimed that smart metering is one of the “fastest growing service lines” in its IoT business.
Airtel said it is working on multi-state equipment in Punjab, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar.
As for the center, it has an ambitious vision to replace 300 million traditional smart meters in the next five years as part of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) initiative.
To recall, Vodafone Idea’s enterprise arm – Vi Business – in September said it had signed an agreement with EESL to install IoT smart meters worth 50 million for DISCOMs in Uttar Pradesh. Of this, 16.7 million smart meters have been installed, 5.16 million for DISCOMs in Haryana and 11.55 million for DISCOMs in UP.
