Mumbai: Adani Electricity has applied to Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for electricity distribution license in Navi Mumbai. Currently, consumers in these areas get power from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and if licensed, Adani will be the second producer.
MERC accepted their application on Friday and now suggestions/objections are being called. Currently, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited supplies power to Mumbai suburbs (except Bhandup and Mulund) and Mira Bhayander.
Consumers in the island city of Mumbai have the option to choose from Tata Power or BEST and the suburbs can choose from Tata Power or Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited.
Currently, MSEDCL supplies 9500 million units to these areas where Adani Electricity Navi Mumbai has applied for licence. Consumers will have a choice of supplier between the incumbent utility and Adani Electricity after the parallel distribution license, the presentation to MERC said.
Adani Group is planning to invest ₹5700 crore for the new network.
