A SkiFree Android port has just been released to Google Play, which means the inaccessible 90s PC game can be found for your phone. Don’t let the name fool you. If you want to ski, you have to pay a little money.
Anyone who owned a Windows computer in the 90s probably has fond memories of SkiFree. For some, it can evoke strong nostalgia for time spent tearing up the slopes with your little pixelated skis.
Others may experience long-term trauma from the SkiFree yeti’s violent and relentless pursuit.
It’s all downhill from here
The purpose of the game is simple. You control a little guy with skis and a funny hat. You can do so with the mouse or arrow keys, and you can choose from one of the three levels to ski down.
Head down to increase speed, and you need to avoid obstacles. You can ski between flags to collect points. When you get out of the way down, a yeti will appear, or eat you.
The funny thing about the SkiFree Android port is that the game wasn’t really intended for release, professional or otherwise.
A fun project turned into Microsoft Classic
Microsoft programmer Chris Pirih developed the game as a hobby. It only became public because the program manager of the Windows Entertainment Pack saw it playing at work.
The manager was so impressed with the game, he included it in the 1991 pack, and the rest is history.
You may not take away from this that playing games in the office during working hours is the secret to success, but we are not your boss.
