According to Met Office figures, the UK will need a near-record coldest December to avoid 2022 being the warmest year on record for the UK.
Provisional figures from the Met Office show that 2022 (September, October, November) was the third warmest on record for the UK, with an average mean temperature of 11.1C, topped only by autumn figures from 2011 and 2006. A series that goes back to 1884.
In addition, every month since November 2022 has been warmer than average, with the first 11 months of the year being the warmest on record for the UK.
Mike Kendon of the National Climate Information Center said: “Although it is too early to guarantee that 2022 will be the UK’s warmest year, the first 11 months have established a distinct possibility of a record warm year with only a very cold December. able to potentially influence where the year will ultimately sit in the record books.”
“All of the top ten warmest years on record for the UK have occurred since 2002; a clear indicator of our warming climate. Human-induced climate change has increased the likelihood of extreme heat, as seen in July this year, but this year has also seen continued warming resulting in The year 2014 is set to challenge the previous record.
A mild and wet autumn
The average autumn temperature provisionally enters as the third warmest autumn for the UK. That warmth compared to average was seen across the UK with England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all seeing average temperatures in their top 5 on record.
Buoyed by a mild September, then the seventh warmest October on record, November continued the mild theme for the season, with southwesterly airflow helping to keep temperatures above average for much of the month.
Rainfall for the season was also above average for many. The UK received 402.5mm of rain, 19% above average. Northern Ireland deviated most significantly from average, with more than a third more rain than would normally be expected, with 433.4mm during the season.
Even in the south of England, much of which experienced late summer drought conditions, 301.9mm of rain fell, 28% above average. However, the year so far has been drier than average, especially in southern areas.
EA Executive Director for Environment and Business, John Leyland, said: “In some areas the exceptionally wet weather during the autumn is beneficial for wetting the soil and improving river flow. Dry land has now been replenished but recharge of groundwater and aquifers is delayed in some parts of the country.
“Reservoirs are averaging around 73% capacity but some are still below the level we expect at this time of year.
“We cannot rely on the weather alone – if we are to avoid a worse drought next year, it will require action by all of us. All sectors have a role to play in supporting the measures needed to avoid the impacts of drought on water supplies and the environment next year, and everyone must use water wisely to continue to reduce water consumption.”

November follows the theme of the season
November came close to setting his own record. According to provisional Met Office figures, November 2022 was the third warmest for the UK, with an average average temperature of 8.2C.
England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland also recorded Novembers in their top five warmest on record.
Mike Kendon said: “There was some exceptionally mild weather in November due to the south-westerly flow of tropical sea air. From the 11th to the 13th we reached the mid to high teens pretty widely – when we would normally expect a maximum temperature of around 10C at this time of year. North Wales has the UK’s highest monthly temperature at 21.2C. The UK was just 1C below the November record.
“We also experienced very mild nights, with both Scotland and Northern Ireland each recording new records for November daily minimum temperatures of 14.6C and 14.5C respectively.
“While the prevailing conditions often lead to milder conditions, they also led to very wet weather, particularly in parts of the south-east of England and eastern Scotland. In just 5 days, parts of Aberdeenshire received 150% of the normal monthly rainfall, which Due to which the worst affected areas faced flooding problems.”
The UK saw 159.8mm of rain, 30% above average. In more granular detail, England saw 133.9mm (45% above average), Wales 199.6mm (23% above average), Scotland 199.6mm (21% above average) and Northern Ireland 118.7mm (3% below average). .
Sunshine during the month was relatively close to average for most, although the north of England had 26% fewer sunshine hours than the average of 44.4 hours. While Northern Ireland had 20% more sunshine than average with 65.4 hours.
