A Detailed Look Back At The Ford Escort RS Turbo

 | Daily News Byte

Ford is one of the most diverse automakers of all time, as it has vehicles of all kinds. Still, the Ford Escort is one of the automaker’s most iconic rides, though not the most exciting. The Ford Escort entered the North American market in 1980 and lasted until 2003. Known as a compact car, the Ford Escort didn’t deliver much in the way of performance. However, a high-performance variant, the Ford Escort RS Turbo, provided an option in the market that was more closely related to the cars that gearheads usually buy.

People liked the Ford Escort RS Turbo because it was more fun to drive than the regular Escort. Although considered a world car, the Ford Escort is not the option you’ll take to a race. To be fair, neither is the RS Turbo, but at least this one has added a little kick to its performance. The Ford Escort RS Turbo is a fitting addition to the model lineup as it has always had a slightly sporty look, even if it cannot be directly compared to a sports car. In many ways, the addition of this new version helped make the car even better, despite the short-lived RS Turbo. The car is also famous because the late Princess Diana also used one.

There’s a lot to appreciate about the Ford Escort RS Turbo. The car has sporty looks and an engine to match while also being an approachable compact car.

The Ford Escort RS Turbo provides a much-needed boost to the model lineup. It has a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four V8 engine under its hood, with a maximum output of 130 horsepower and a torque of 132 lb-ft. It is a front-wheel drive vehicle with a manual transmission. Fortunately, this version of the Ford Escort is still very fuel efficient despite being a turbocharged car. According to reports, it gets an average of 32 miles to the gallon.

Regarding speed, the Ford Escort RS Turbo is better than the regular Escort. The RS Turbo accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 8.8 seconds. It goes through the quarter-mile in 17.5 seconds at 90 miles per hour and has a top speed of 128 miles per hour. Although far from being the fastest Ford, the RS Turbo is more than fast enough for its target audience. For the sake of comparison, a standard 1986 Ford Escort goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 11.4 seconds.

The Ford Escort RS Turbo may not be the fastest car, but it has a ton of style. The vehicle has a more sporty look than the original version. One of the main differences is that the car only comes in limited color options, most of which are diamond white. However, Princess Diana owned a black one as a special request. In fact, Princess Diana was a fan of Escorts in general. Aside from the limited color options, people know the RS Turbo because it’s boxier than the regular Escort and sits lower to the ground. However, one of the design flaws of this car is that many people report that the car does not drive well, and it is not a smooth ride. The rear of the car is always in need of correction, and there is a ton of noise inside.

Early Ford Escort models had a sporty look that later models did not. The RS Turbo version takes it up a notch, and is considered one of the best versions of the car.

The Ford Escort RS Turbo is an ’80s car, which means its interior is pretty straightforward. The interior of the Ford Escort RS Turbo has cloth Recaro bucket seats, your regular instrument cluster, and knobs for heat and AC. The steering wheel has settings on both sides. The Ford Escort RS Turbo doesn’t offer a ton of storage, but people don’t know the Ford Escort for its abundance of space. Overall, the exterior is not the best part of the car. Of course, not bad. It is simply a product of its time.

The Ford Escort is one of the most iconic cars of recent memory. However, the car has gained different reputations around the world. European versions are always taken more seriously than models sold in other parts of the world, and the Escort RS Turbo is one of those cars, because people can only buy it in Europe initially. Luckily, some of the cars made it to countries like the United States. Of course, finding a state is rare, but it is not impossible. The Ford Escort RS Turbo is an all-around great car that stands as one of the most powerful iconic car models from Ford.
