Welcome to the 464th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Happy Holidays, and here are the top headlines from last week:
- Our Andrew Grush took a good look at the game on a Chromebook. He knows it’s great, and there’s hope for Chrome OS as a gaming platform. However, there are some kinks to work out, as shown in his article linked above. Read it.
- YouTube has announced that it is partnering with the NFL to offer NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV. Google is paying $2 billion per season for the deal, so we expect a lot of people to find it interesting. This is a big deal for YouTube TV because it greatly improves the sports options of the platform. Apple is considered the favorite to win the deal. We hope the NFL has decided to side with Google on this one.
- A surprising number of our readers are using Chrome OS. We published a poll last week, and more than 50% of respondents said they use Chromebooks every day. However, we believe that Chromebook owners are more attracted to the article than users of other platforms. However, it is encouraging to know that Chrome OS is alive and well among our readers.
- Our own Kaitlyn Cimino wrote an article this week about sleep data. It’s a good read, especially when people put too much weight on that data. His advice, most importantly, is to stop worrying about it and let the pieces fall where they may. Getting a good night’s sleep is important, but you won’t be able to get a good night’s sleep if you’re always worried about getting a good night’s sleep.
- Elon Musk posted a poll on Twitter this week. He asked if he would leave the head of Twitter, and then said that he would care about the results of the election. The poll ended with 57.5% of respondents saying they wanted him to resign. Click the link for more details, but if he can’t find someone to take the job, he probably won’t leave.
Miko Era
Price: Play for free
Miko Era is an MMORPG, and it has a lot of potential. You start the game as the ultimate Miko Envoy, and you are responsible for activating other Miko. The game is good. You travel around an open world, interact with NPCs, defeat bad guys, and do your thing. Graphics are also average. It doesn’t look good, but it’s not terrible. On the other hand, it has a manual option for those who are sick of all the auto-play MMORPGs that have come out recently.
The game is free like most games in the genre, and it’s true that it’s impossible to see which way this will go. It can be good, or it can fail. We know that the developer may fix the lag issues that players are experiencing.
reWASD Junior
Price: Free / $7-$40
C. Scott Brown wrote about his experience with reWASD this week. For those who don’t know, reWASD is a mapping program that allows you to remap buttons on anything to do other things. It comes with an Android app, as long as you are connected to the same network as your PC, you can remap your device using your phone. There are too many features to list here, so check out the article linked above to learn more about them. The app isn’t new, but it’s cool.
Northern Kingdom
Price: Freedom
North Kingdom is a tower defense game. Players build a wall to repel enemies so that arrows can take out the bad guys. It’s not the hardest game, and there are many ways to win each round. You can expand your towers, which will add depth. The game offers no in-app purchases, no ads, and offline play. It’s not the deepest tower defense game on mobile. However, it is the best free screen game without ads or in-app purchases that we have seen.
Note the expiration date
Price: Freedom
Expiry Date Reminder is a simple app with a simple purpose. You put things in your pantry, fridge, etc., with the expiration date on them. The app notifies you when the expiration date is reached. The app lets you add an unlimited number of items for free, and the UI is easy to use. You can use it with medicine, subscription, food, and anything else you can think of. It’s a new app by an independent developer, so we don’t know how stable it is on every phone, but it worked well with our testers.
1 Bit Live
Price: Free / $2.99
1 Bit Survivor is a roguelike with survival horror elements. It uses low quality graphics and frenetic action to keep the player engaged. Your goal is to survive for 28 days and save your pet cat. Some of the game features include offline play, three unlockable levels, and no microtransactions. In terms of gameplay, it is similar to other roguelikes, except that this one uses first-person animations for some of the player’s actions. Not much, but it adds a bit of visual appeal. The game is great, and we think it’s great.
