The Kia Niro hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and all-electric models have undergone massive redesigns for 2023. All three boast a refreshed exterior design, and the PHEV now gets 33 miles of scope. The Niro EV’s range has also increased, and its interior quality looks better. So it is now in a better position to compete with rivals. To prove it, here are five categories where the 2023 Kia Niro EV beats the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
1. The 2023 Kia Niro EV is more affordable than the Mach-E

Kia has priced the 2023 Niro EV Wind at just $39,450 to start, and the upgraded Wave trim starts at $44,450. Both have the same powertrain, so you’re not losing performance by buying the lower trim. The Air also has plenty of standard convenience tech and 20 safety functions.
The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E is more expensive than both Niro EV trims, starting at $46,895. If you want all-wheel drive (which isn’t available on the Niro EV), Ford charges $2,700. The most expensive model, the performance-optimized GT Extended Range, costs $69,895.
2. The Niro has a better standard driving range than the Mach-E
According to Kia, both Niro EV trims get 253 miles of electric range. 70% of the battery can be restored in less than 45 minutes using a DC fast charger. The standard powertrain makes 201 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E with the Standard Range battery only gets 247 miles of range or 230 miles with AWD. However, if you option your Mach-E with the Extended Range battery, those numbers increase to 306 miles and 290 miles. Additionally, the Mustang Mach-E’s base powertrain is more powerful, with 266 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque.
Ford says the GT model has a maximum range of just 270 miles. Note that the Extended Range battery is an $8,600 upgrade for front-wheel-drive models and $11,300 with AWD.
3. The 2023 Kia Niro EV also has better fuel economy
In addition to increased range, the 2023 Niro EV boasts a fuel economy rating of 113 MPGe. Kia also offers an available heat pump to keep that mileage estimate as high as possible in the colder months.
The EPA does not yet have any official MPGe ratings for the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E. However, last year’s model got 103 MPGe at best with the Standard Range battery. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is rated for just 84 MPGe.
4. The 2023 Kia Niro EV tops the Mach-E in ground clearance
Those who live in colder climates may be hesitant to buy an EV without AWD. Despite the lack of that feature, the Kia Niro EV can hold its own on small snow mounds with a ground clearance of 5.9 inches. The Niro EV also has an advanced traction control system that detects and mitigates wheel spin.
But the Ford Mustang Mach-E isn’t too far behind, with 5.7 inches of ground clearance.
5. Ford can’t beat Kia’s standard warranty
According to Edmunds, the Ford Mustang Mach-E’s standard warranty is for three years or 36,000 miles. For 2023, all electrical components are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles. You also get a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
The 2023 Kia Niro EV boasts a superior standard warranty: five years or 60,000 miles. It also has standard powertrain coverage for 10 years or 100,000 miles.
Although the Ford Mustang Mach-E provides powerful and efficient powertrain options, they can quickly drain your wallet. Despite some limitations, the 2023 Kia Niro EV is efficient and affordable enough to provide great value.
