The trailer for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has fans of the franchise excited, and for good reason, as Indiana Jones Fans will return to the movies and see Harrison Ford reprise his iconic role. It’s always exciting when an actor returns to one of their most recognizable roles, even if their last appearance was years ago. Harrison Ford is no stranger to this, as he also returned to Star Wars as Han Solo 32 years after the original trilogy, as well as appearing in Blade Runner sequel 35 years after his first visit here.
Many actors in Hollywood are willing to return to the roles that really put them on the map or stick in people’s minds when they think of that actor. It’s nice to see performers not rejecting those roots, because some (albeit understandably) might want to distance themselves from their past work, especially if it’s the only thing people recognize them as. Here are 5 other actors who returned to their iconic roles after at least a decade.
Kurt Russell – Snake Plissken
Kurt Russell’s performance as Snake Plissken in the 1981 film Escape From New York was instantly iconic, and almost earned him his own franchise. It didn’t really pan out, but viewers were still treated to Plissken’s return Escape From LA in 1996, 15 years after Russell’s original appearance. Snake Plissken was a kind of blueprint for cool action heroes that came later in the ’80s and ’90s, but the market was too oversaturated at the time Escape From LA appeared for Russell to have more character time.
Jamie Lee Curtis – Laurie Strode
As the Scream Queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis has returned as Laurie Strode numerous times, and the gaps between her appearances spanned decades each time. Then Halloween II, Halloween: H20 is the next time Laurie Strode is in the franchise, 17 years later (and 20 years after the original Halloween). Curtis then took another break from the franchise before appearing in David Gordon Green Halloween trilogy, with the first film coming out in 2018, 16 years after his last appearance in the franchise in Halloween: Resurrection. It’s safe to say that Curtis’ turn as Laurie Strode is one of the most iconic in film history, and she seems to have no qualms about sticking with the character.
Leonard Nimoy – Spock
Nimoy portrayed what is possibly one of the most iconic characters in pop culture in his portrayal of Spock in Star Trek, and he didn’t just do it once. He has a cameo appearance Star Trek (2009), in which he played Spock Prime, 18 years after his last appearance as the character. It was a huge opportunity to bring him back for that movie, and it made sense. Why not bring back one of the most popular characters of all time if you have the chance, and if the original actor is perfectly willing to return?
Sylvester Stallone – Rocky and Rambo
Stallone gets a special shoutout for returning to an iconic character decades after his last appearance not once, but twice. He waited 16 years in between Rocky V and Rocky Balboa to return to the character loved by many, but his return to Rambo will be after a longer gap. There were 20 years between his appearance as John Rambo in Rambo III and Rambo (2008), and then another 11 in between Rambo (2008) and Rambo: Last Blood. Stallone really knows which characters people want to see, and he picks the right time to make those returns.
Ellen Degeneres and Albert Brooks – Dory and Marlin
In a slight deviation from previous entries, this one features 2 actors and focuses on vocal performances rather than live-actions. Degeneres and Brooks lend their voices to Dory and Marlin Finding Nemo, where their performances are some of the most memorable in Disney/Pixar history. They returned to their roles after 13 years Finding Dory, and it really seems like no time has passed. It’s exciting for many fans to see the characters they loved as children revisited now that those same audience members are adults, or approaching adulthood.
