Many publications produce their own version of the best cars list every year. For iSeeCars, the best midsize SUVs for 2022 feature many models from many different automakers. One of the most popular automakers is Ford, which offers two models in the midsize SUV segment. The Ford Explorer made the top 5 in its class, the Ford Edge, however, fell short. What makes a Ford midsize SUV a top 5 model but not the other?
1 Ford midsize SUV is a top 5 model

According to iSeeCars, the Ford Explorer is a top 5 model in the midsize SUV segment. Finishing fifth out of 16 models reviewed, it’s one of the best money can buy. The iSC likes it for its passenger space, advanced 4×4 all-wheel drive system, and class-leading engines. Plus, the Explorer offers a hybrid powertrain, meaning it gets better fuel economy than many of its closest competitors. The Explorer also earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus award, the industry’s highest safety standards award. As a result, iSC gave it a perfect 10/10 for safety.
Additionally, value retention and reliability aren’t bad either. Explorers don’t quite retain value, but better than many, earning a 7.4/10 in this category. Similarly, iSC gave it an 8.4 out of 10 for reliability. Older Explorers were notorious for being problematic, but modern models have largely resolved those issues.
The Ford Edge is not in the top 10 best midsize SUVs
Unlike the Explorer, the Ford Edge midsize SUV is not a top 5 midsize SUV. In fact, it wasn’t even a top 10 midsize SUV, as it finished at number 12 overall. While the publication loves the Edge’s excellent ST performance trim, impressive safety technology for a low-end model, and roomy interior, the Edge has a few problems.
One of the iSC’s most common problems with midsize SUVs is the lack of a hybrid or electric powertrain. While many models only get green options, no engine with better fuel economy is available for the Ford Edge. Without one of these options, the Edge’s poor fuel economy makes it less desirable for many buyers.
Additionally, iSC says it’s overdue for a redesign, and we tend to agree. The midsize SUV still looks the same as it did after the latest redesign in 2015. We expect a full redesign to come in the next few years. Until then, the overall look of the Edge was dull, boring, and outdated.
The worse Ford midsize SUV is more expensive

Another of the best reasons to buy or not buy a car is cost. Many buyers are turned off by something that is too expensive, regardless of what the model offers the owners. Ford midsize SUVs are a clear indicator while the Explorer gets a higher ranking. The better of the two models starts at $35,510, while the outside-the-top-10 Edge starts at $37,945. While the more expensive Explorer trim outsells any version of the smaller Edge SUV, the base model’s starting price is a negative, too high.
In conclusion, a Ford midsize SUV is a top 5 model, according to iSeeCars. The Ford Explorer is one of the five best models in its class. However, the Ford Edge fell short, finishing outside the top 10 overall. With such a huge ranking difference, iSC clearly believes the Explorer is a better option from the Ford SUV lineup.
